When installing a new fence, one of the key questions that you will need to determine is, what size of fence post will you need?
Concrete fence posts are renowned for their durability, weather resistance and versatility, being available in a wide range of different sizes. This allows you to achieve the exact fence height that you require for your specific use case.
If you’re not sure what size of fence post you need, keep reading. Below, our experts have shared a handy guide to the most common fence panel heights, and the size of concrete posts that will allow you to achieve that.

Standard fence panel and post sizes
Concrete fence posts are available in an extensive variety of different heights. In fact, when it comes to choosing a fence height, you aren’t bound by the height of the posts – concrete posts are designed to accommodate this level of flexibility.
The key point to note is that your fence post must be taller than the fence panel. This will ensure that there is sufficient length allowed for the fence post to be set in the ground, with enough stability to achieve a long lifespan.
The most common concrete post sizes – and the fence panel heights that they should be used with – are:
- 6ft Concrete Fence Posts, 3ft Fence Panels – Around 2ft of the post should be set in the ground.
- 7ft Concrete Fence Posts, 4ft Fence Panels – Around 2ft of the post should be set in the ground.
- 8ft Concrete Fence Posts, 5ft Fence Panels – Around 2ft of the post should be set in the ground.
- 9ft Concrete Fence Posts, For 5ft 6in Fence Panels – Around 3ft of the post should be set in the ground.
You can also further vary the height of your fence with the addition of extra components like gravel boards (which will add some extra height to your fence panels, while also improving your fence’s moisture resistance).
How deep should you set concrete posts?
As a general rule of thumb, you should set concrete fence posts so that at least a third of their total length is in the ground.
This ensures sufficient depth to give the fence stability, wind resistance, and the ability to withstand all general wear and tear.
Then, when installing your concrete posts, we recommend filling the hole with either a postcrete or concrete mixture. This will add further strength and durability to your fence.
